The AAAM program is developing a radar-guided missile to replace the Phoenix air-to-air missile, in use by the US Navy. Intended to be lighter than the Phoenix (1,000 lbs/460 kg), the AAAM will weigh no more than 650 lbs and have a 9-in diameter. While the Phoenix is only used by the F-14, the Navy hopes to deploy the AAAM on the F/A-18, ATA, and A-6F as well and possibly adapt it for use by the Air Force's F-15 and ATF. The program is still in the early design stages.
